Overview

Digital Mobile TV business is a contested area between two established businesses, broadcast TV and cellular telephony. Both parties believe that they should have the upper hand in this new business. There are also many other parties in the business of delivering live video to mobile devices, and therefore we will see several different business models in the Mobile TV business. Mobile TV is still in its early phases, and there are several competing mobile TV standards. This report includes a thorough discussion of all broadcast mobile TV standards: DVB-H, DMB, MediaFLO, 1seg, MBMS, TDtv, CMMB, TMMB, DMB-T/H, CDMB, CMB and ATSC-M/H. The market is very fragmented at the moment, and it is unlikely we will see only one global mobile TV standard. Subscriber growth in different markets is forecast until 2013. The shortage of radio spectrum may also have an impact on Mobile-TV, and it is discussed in this report. In a few years time cellular operators will upgrade their networks to 3.9G / 4G, and may start providing mobile TV services via their high capacity networks. The report will also have a look at new disruptive technologies which may seriously unsettle the business plans of existing companies in the Mobile TV industry.
